Government Gateway Now Easier to Access

Recent reports have shown that some taxpayers have been struggling to access their tax accounts on the Government Gateway, HMRC have now made this easier to do. 

All personal and business tax accounts require a Government Gateway login to access, but due to the strict ID requirement some taxpayers have found it difficult to set up accounts. The requirement to verify the identity of the individual is extremely crucial due to the sensitive nature of the information contained within the accounts. The number of options to do this were greatly reduced in April 2022 when Verify, the government’s former digital sign in service, was removed. 

HMRC has now responded by making it easier to access thanks to permitting GB diving licences to be used as one of the two options.  

Taxpayers are now able to choose any two items from the following: 

• tax credit claim details  
• P60 or most recent payslips  
• UK passport details  
• information held on a credit file (such as loans, credit cards or mortgages)  
• a self-assessment tax return (in the last three years)  
• GB driving licence (DVLA-issued) or NI driving licence (DVA-issued)
